With the man of the hour: Gerry Alanguilan.

January 20, 2019.

After six long years, the eagerly anticipated Fourth San Pablo City Comics Festival finally opened its doors to the residents and visitors of San Pablo City.  The event, billed as a “celebration of Philippine comics as a form of art, entertainment, education,” featured a number of new and established independent comic book creators and publishers.

In the afternoon, guest speakers Manix Abrera and Gioseppe Custodio (aka Loser Mangaka) each took their turn onstage and shared some of their adventures in producing independent comics.  The Fourth San Pablo City Comics Festival was also not without its star value as it entertained a number of notable guest in the comic book field such as Leinil Francis Yu, Carlo Pagulayan, Stephen Jorge Segovia, Michael Jason Paz, Jeff Huet, and even legendary Filipino illustrator Doninador “Hal” Santiago–who just happened to be taking a walk with his wife along Sampaloc Lake that day when he came across a Comics Festival banner.[i]

The event also served as a birthday celebration of sorts for one of the Festival’s founders and chief organizer, Gerry Alanguilan, who turned 51.

Happy Birthday Sir Gerry! Read more…

Clockwise: Lakeside view. | Photo oppotunity outside of the very intimate Rono’s Place. | That’s my room on the top floor of Ang Tahanan ni Aling Meding.

A first for everything

Over the last two or three years, my friends and I have gone on several day trips to San Pablo City–the farthest point that I have ever driven down south.  On each of those road trips, I was always the one behind the wheel with my friends usually handling the navigational duties.

Armed then with the ever reliable Goggle maps, a confidence-building group presence, and (much needed) good conversation—we hardly felt any of those three-hour trips[i].

However, today’s narrative was quite different with me going on it solo and I’d be lying if I told you that I wasn’t the least bit concerned[ii].

But I managed, powered through, and arrived in San Pablo unscathed at about 3:20 pm. Read more…

The Walking Dead Series [Novels]

Yes, there are novels based on Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead series.

Over a three-year period, The Walking Dead co-creator and writer worked with author/director Jay Bonansinga on three tie-in novels[i] chronicling the journey of Brian Blake–the man whom we would come to know as The Governor.  Fortunately, I was able to find the first two books during one of my legendary Booksale runs [The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor (2011) and The Walking Dead: The Road to Woodbury (2012)] and the third during the Big Bad Wolf Books event in 2017 [The Walking Dead: The Fall of the Governor (2013)]. The Good Samaritan Collection: Starbucks Reserve Philippines Coffee Cards (January 17, 2019)

The Collection that was never meant to beimg_6029

What was only meant to be a simple inquiry–well, more of a comment actually–on the Starbucks Reserve Christmas 2018 Coffee Card suddenly took a life of its own when I was handed several by a Good Samaritan.

Nine to be exact.

I have always admired the Coffee Cards from a distance, but never ventured to inquire about them as I immediately assumed that the only way I could get one would be to purchase a bag of coffee beans[i].

So the question now is: Do I actually take the time to find the most “economically viable” way to get the rest of them?

Man, things have just gotten serious. Read more…
