Funko POP!: A Completists Paradise…or Nightmare (July 22, 2018)

07/22/2018 Leave a comment

Despite the growing popularity of the Funko POP! Vinyl line in the Philippines, I’ve held off[i] buying any of their products largely due to their simplicity and lack of articulation.  I think I may have also reached a point wherein I swore I would never buy anything Funko.

Well, that all change in 2017 when I was introduced[ii] to Adult Swim’s animated science fiction adventure comedy series called Rick and Morty.  If that introduction wasn’t enough, I was completely hooked after watching this video below (Note: This is the uncensored version.):

I know right!  This show has everything!  An 80’s nod here and there.

I could totally relate.

Rick and Morty POP Collection 1

My Rick and Morty Funko Pop! Collection Checklist (Part 1 of 3): Finding the GameStop and Hot Topic exclusives will be a tall order.

Interest leads to Want

But like with many other things in life, interest oftentimes leads to Want. With Want sometimes gets confused with Need.

That’s where Funko comes in—supplying that void called Want/Need.  The toy manufacturer gained the licensing rights to produce Rick and Morty merchandise and boy, did they produce.  As of this post, there have been 45 regular and exclusive Vinyl figures, 2 regular and exclusive POP! Rides, and a 2-pack exclusive that have been released into primary and secondary markets. Read more…

Clockwise: Leinil (Right) and Gerry share a moment. | Photo opportunity with Leinil and Gerry. Thanks guys for signing my books and pages. | Photo with Bucky Captain America! | The stuff I had signed at the event.[ii]

Earlier this afternoon, I proceeded to Comic Odyssey’s newest branch on Level 3 of Robinson’s Galleria for the Captain America (Volume #9 | Issue #1) signing event featuring Leinil Francis Yu and Gerry Alanguilan.

The event, scheduled from 1pm onwards, was held in the common area directly in front of Comic Odyssey.  The open space not only gave the guest artists and patrons more breathing room but also served to attract fans/passersby who were otherwise unaware of the Captain America signing.[i] Read more…

Marvel Run Philippines 2018

Clockwise: Part of our Premium Race Pack (not pictured is the Marvel-themed drawstring bag) | Making my way though a sea of runners. | We did it!

One of the things that my son wanted for his birthday was to participate in the very first Marvel themed run in the Philippines.  Now how could any parent–especially this parent–say no to that request!

Held at the Block 16, SM Mall of Asia Event Grounds, we arrived in time for a number of ColorRun Manila pre-run activities such as the “Stan Lee” interview and the Asgardian stretching exercises led by The Amazing Spider-Man and Loki: The God of Mischief.

Not long after the 10K runners sped off, our Captain America themed group positioned ourselves near the starting gate and the next thing we knew, confetti flew through the air to signal the start of our 5k race.

Clockwise: Just some of 30+ cards that I have in my personal collection. | My last Frap for the year…and until November 2018 for that matter.  They got the spelling of my name wrong but it’s all good.

During the latter part of 2017, I noticed that I’ve slowly amassed a stack of Philippine issued Starbucks Cards.  It was never my intention to collect them–it just happened.  But I am getting ahead of myself; for you guys to understand the genesis of this collection, we need to go back to the beginning.

2013

Four years ago, I purchased the first two local card designs released in the country with the intention of maximizing their new My Starbucks Rewards Program.  The rewards program offered a number of enticing incentives such as a free drink–of the patron’s choice-when they registered their Starbucks Card over at www.starbuckscard.ph; a free Grande drink for every accumulated twelve (12) Beverage Stars; the option of pooling all of your future Starbucks Cards into a single account; and a free slice of cake during the registered card holder’s birthday[i]. Star Wars Movie Night: We caught the 4:00 pm showing on Day 2 of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. | The Skywalker Genogram: Prior to watching Episode VIII, I explained the lineage of Ben Solo with the help a Genogram.  In hindsight, I should have also put in Anakin’s Mom–Shmi Skywalker Lars and her husband Cliegg Lars.  If it were to be even more detailed, Owen (Cliegg’s only son with his late wife Aika) and his wife Beru would also be included.

Disclaimer: If you haven’t watched Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, don’t read any further.

Are you sure you want to know what I think?

Well, you have been warned.

The Internal Debate

Before I begin, I just wanted to say that this was probably one of the most difficult posts that I’ve ever written to date. Largely in part to the fact that I’ve broken the first rule in blogging—I stopped writing solely for myself and have taken into account what others may feel about my opinions on the film.

And there have been many. Read more…
