Review: Bumblebee (2018) [No Spoilers] (January 9, 2019)

img_59156:45 pm – Went almost no time to spare, the family and I managed to get into one of the last first day screenings of Bumblebee (2018) at Festival Mall’s high end theatre: Box Office Cinemas.

The film–#6 in Michael Bay’s live action Transformers’ cinematic franchise–was initially billed as a spin-off that somehow transformed into a reboot[i].

Probably for the best.

Set in 1987, the classic look of most of the characters, vehicles, and period references[ii] is almost certain to bring back some much needed 80’s nostalgia.  More importantly: Don’t miss the film’s opening sequence under any circumstances[iii]!

In closing, I have always been a big believer that the Transformers franchise should never have been modernized for today’s audiences as giving them today’s technology would just make the already unbelievable premise…well…too unbelievable.

Setting it in the 80’s was a great call.

[i] Without the powers that be actually saying it was a reboot.
[ii] Watch out for Indiana Jones, The Thing, and a little Stan Bush.
[iii] As well as the mid-credit scene.  Sorry guys, no end-credit scene.
